In Relief # 1 & 2

In Relief # 1 & 2 In Relief # 1 & 2 “The back-page of History”. In Relief is a unique collaboration between visual artist Anu Pennanen and musician Sasu Ripatti – aka Vladislav Delay. Realised during the pandemic, the duo asked us to think beyond the gallery, into the world, and the complicated overlapping past, present and future histories that we inherit. Exploring two specific sites, DK Gaza in St. Petersburg, and La Rasude in Lausanne, the duo aimed at creating for each site an immaterial monument of the small anonymous corners of everyday life in a given place. Itä Pasila

Itä Pasila Itä Pasila “What does it mean to “inherit” a city? What do we inherit?” The city is on the one hand the object of what the inhabitants think and judge that of which is “urban”; on the other side, the city is this complex process of planning and construction. The concept of Heredity is what we inherit passively; inheritance, on the other hand, is what one chooses to inherit; it’s about Freedom. This hybrid film work by Anu Pennanen in collaboration with the inhabitants of Itä Pasila, a multicultural neighbourhood in Helsinki, is based on the idea of what we inherit from the city, rather than talking about the notion of “patrimoine”. It involves youth, elders, different social and ethnic backgrounds in an archaeological approach to re-look at the city, to disarm the eyes of preconceived ideas and ask: how do we inhabit, and how do we insert ourselves into a larger History? How do we negotiate our right to the city? Date: 2025 Producer: PALO With the support of: Linnamo Foundation, the City of Helsinki, EMO Foundation. A Poem to Read when I’m Gone

A Poem to Read when I’m Gone A Poem to Read when I’m Gone “Welcome to the limbo of our society”. A man—be he Syrian, Afghan or Kurd—flees from a refugee centre at the former Berlin Tempelhof airport. From then on, he lives alone between the lockers at train stations, unobserved by passers-by, barred from life by fences. He murmurs a poem that, like an incantation for a better life, accompanies his bleak existence. Anu Pennanen makes a cautious and gentle approach to a dull reality that can only be endured thanks to the forces of poetry.
